Foreign minister Penny Wong has urged Israel to “cease the attacking of hospitals” in Gaza and called for “steps towards” a ceasefire. “We all want to take the next steps towards a ceasefire, but it cannot be one-sided,” Wong told the ABC’s Insiders program. “ Hamas still holds hostages, and is still attacking Israel .” Wong said that Australia affirms Israel ’s right to defend itself, but it “must comply with and observe international law.
” “The standards that we seek and accept from are higher,” due to its status as a democracy, Wong said. “We have seen a harrowing number of civilians, including children, killed. This has to end, and we are particularly concerned with what is happening with medical facilities.” Wong said that Hamas’ deployment in and around civilian infrastructure “does not obviate the requirement to observe international law.
