Our vessel approached feeding humpbacks displaying bubble-net feeding.
Kooloonbung Creek nature reserve is a pristine waterway in Port Macquarie that many waterbirds call home. While diving in the creek, this great cormorant has mistaken a very attractive lure for a tasty fish and got itself hooked. It was taking a rest on the rocky edge and would jump into the creek when I moved close. Recreational fishers need to take care when fishing from the shore.
Tailings dams have a sinister beauty – the colours are extraordinary. They often contain waste materials, such as toxic chemicals and heavy metals, which can harm birdlife and ground water. It’s estimated that there are about 18,000 tailings dams around the world. Kokatha Country, Outback, South Australia
In 1970, Lake Mokoan was created by a dam for irrigation and as a Murray River drought reserve. Sadly, this led to flooding that claimed about 150,000 river red gums in the surrounding areas. A platypus decides to climb around a waterfall in a small creek, rather than swimming through it. Although easier, this does expose the platypus to potential predators, such as dogs. Platypuses are able to tuck the webbing of their front feet out of the way while on land and are surprisingly good climbers. Nuenonne Country, South Hobart, Tasmania
