An Australian man and his Indonesian girlfriend have been sentenced in a Bali court to five years and four months in prison each for possessing cocaine.
Brendon Johnsson, from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, and his partner Remi Purwanti, both 43, were arrested in August 2018 with 11.6 grams of cocaine, separated into 13 plastic bags. Presiding Judge I Ketut Kimiarsa told a court yesterday that the panel of judges had exercised leniency in their sentencing, based on both defendants having no prior criminal records and expressing regret for their crime.Johnsson and Purwanti, who were each fined 800 million rupiah or an additional two months in prison, are not appealing.
The couple had initially faced a possible death sentence when they were arrested, with police seeking to have them charged with drug dealing.
