Australia's Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) calls for drug reforms, including decriminalisation, regulated cannabis trials, and expanded syringe programs, marking a shift towards health-focused strategies.
One of Australia's peak medical bodies, the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), is calling for significant drug reform involving decriminalisation, trials of regulated cannabis markets, and expanding access to free syringe programs . In New South Wales (NSW), out of 6,332 minor drug charges issued between February and August, only 6.4 per cent were diverted from the courts. The NSW government has committed to developing a drug strategy but is unlikely to include decriminalisation.
The RACP, with over 30,000 specialists from 33 different specialties, demands health-focused reforms in drug policy. The college's new position statement will act as a framework for lobbying governments and organisations, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to drug policy informed by health evidence
