In downtown Beirut, black and white portraits of hundreds of victims stare out from a wall. Among the images is the face of two-year-old boy Isaac Oehlers, whose parents have returned to Australia.
The blast on August 4, 2020 was caused by an explosion of almost three tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored at the port.
"Corruption in Lebanon has become so evident that you will not find any political party or any senior official in Lebanon denying that corruption exists," Aja Mazjoub, the Lebanon researcher for Human Rights Watch, told 7.30. But his attempt to charge the acting prime minister and three former ministers with negligence failed when they refused to be questioned, claiming immunity.
Acting Justice Minister Marie-Claude Najm says the blast "brought to light the deep failings of the administration".
