There’s a one-in-eight chance composer William Barton will wake up on Australia Day as Australian of the Year.
Australia Day, he notes, has almost organically evolved from a nationalistic celebration to a day of profound national self-reflection. A day in which many Australians are confronted with uncomfortable truths of their nation’s past. “I’m going to continue to use this day as a day of healing and connection to acknowledge what needs to be done and the way I do that is through the music.”From his early days learning the didgeridoo from elders around Mount Isa, and being introduced to classical music by his mother, Barton has had a long fascination with both musical traditions and how they could interact.
“Mum used to play classical music to me before I was born and during my childhood, and so I had that seed planted, but then through my uncle I was drawn into the mysticism of the didgeridoo, the power, the raw energy of it.
