Australia’s ‘Special K’ combination - Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis - will be back at the new Kia Arena on Sunday as they look to cause damage in the men’s doubles draw.
On Friday the close friends eliminated the men’s doubles top seeds - Croatians Nikova Mektic and Mate Pavic - and, not long after, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis will play their doubles quarter-final against Uruguay’s Ariel Behar and Ecuador’s Gonzalo Escobar, no earlier than 4pm AEST on the new 5000-seat stadiumWildcard Chris O’Connell’s inspired run through the Australian Open is over after he was outlasted by USA’s Maxime Cressy on court three this evening.
O’Connell won the second set on a tiebreak to keep himself in the match and after giving up a break point, had several chances to take a break of his own off Cressy but the tall American had too many tricks and was able to escape and take the victory. Cressy had 71 winners to 43 from O’Connell as he won the match 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 41 minutes.
