Australian Open organisers are awaiting a possible legal challenge from defending champion Novak Djokovic against the decision to revoke his visa for the second time.
But should Djokovic mount a challenge and no decision be forthcoming, and provided the 20-time major winner does not withdraw immediately, a lucky loser would fill the spot.
The furore regarding 34-year-old Djokovic’s participation in the Australian Open has won the tournament enormous free publicity. Barry O’Brien, the chairman of Atomic212, another large independent media agency, went further. Bosses at Tennis Australia and Nine, which broadcasts the Open, would be fist pumping behind closed doors despite the chaos that Djokovic’s border woes have caused, Mr O’Brien said.“It’s the greatest publicity stunt ever,” Mr O’Brien said. “If he [Djokovic] stays and if he plays, then mate they’ll be hanging off rafters to have a look.
