Australian Open breakout star Arthur Cazaux has suffered a worrying fainting episode in the heat at the Miami Open. The 21-year-old led his French countryman Harold Mayot in the third set of their first-round qualifying when his health scare ended the match after two hours and 10 minutes.
WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Cazaux faints during qualifying match. Mayot was in the opening stages of his service motion when Cazaux suddenly rocked to his left and fell to the court. Cazaux, who has long counted his fitness as one of his biggest advantages, settled on his back and was briefly motionless before an official rushed to his aide. In a positive sign, he was awake and talking when he left the court in a wheelchair. An initial clip of the incident prompted criticism towards Mayot for not immediately checking on Cazaux, for which he was accused by fans for being “heartless”. But he hit back and offered more context on X after the match. “Stop starting a false controversy for nothing. It had been several games since he didn’t feel well and he was starting to cramp,” Mayot wrote in French. “I didn’t see him fall and I thought he was lying down because he had a cramp. When I understood that it was serious I immediately went to him and I was very worried. “I did my best to help. There is nothing but great friendship and respect between us and always has been. You need to stop sending your hate all the time. I wish him a good recovery and the best.” The Frenchmen, from opposite ends of their country, played off for the Australian Open junior title in 2020 with Mayot winning in straight sets. Cazaux’s star has risen faster since they made the move to the men’s tour, reaching six ATP Challenger finals for three victories. He found more success at the Australian Open this year when, as a wildcard ranked 122nd in the world, he reached the fourth round. Cazaux defeated world No.33 Laslo Djere in five sets in the first round and backed it up with a shock four-set win over world No.8 Holger Rune. Both matches took nearly three hours and 30 minutes yet far from fatigued, he defeated 28th seed Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets. His tournament came to an end in a two-and-a-half-hour straight-sets defeat to world No.9 Hubert Hurkacz.
