Australia's first confirmed athlete for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has been named, with open water swimmer Chelsea Gubecka thrilled to be heading to her second Olympics, even as questions remain over the event's River Seine location.
Chelsea Gubecka will compete in the 10km marathon swim in Paris after finishing third at August's World Championships
"I was only 17 when I made my first Games so I probably didn't soak in the experience as much as I should have, but this is really special. Kareena Lee won Australia's first Olympic open water swimming medal with a third-placed finish in Tokyo. "World Aquatics remains excited at the prospect of city-centre Olympic racing for the world's best open-water swimmers next summer.
Additional infrastructure is still in the works, including a giant underground reservoir in Paris that will stock excess water during storms so it doesn't spill untreated into the river.Swimming in the Seine has, with some exceptions, been off-limits since 1923, but a clean-up is underway for the 2024 Olympics.A subsequent triathlon test event went by without issue later in August, but the World Triathlon Para Cup was cancelled just two days later.
