Many communities know all too well what it's like when young people get into trouble, but a program run by police officers is now teaching at-risk teenagers how to take responsibility. 9News

The bootcamps include outdoor activities such as abseiling and short courses which teach youth important life skills, with the aim to mentor and empower disconnected teens.

He says youths can expect a certain amount of toughness in the program, which they don't make any apologies for, as they teach important skills to help them through life. The teen is the star of his barista course, completing a Certificate One in hospitality while learning life skills that go way beyond making coffee."I was not really going to school and I was trying to think of other opportunities like pathways I could take," Izzy said.Youths are able to learn new skills, which include apprenticeships and barista courses.

Dean completed the Kokoda trek five years ago as part of Project Booyah and is now a mentor himself for the program in Townsville, after it helped him turn his own life around.
