Australian researchers have discovered a rare interstellar event with the longest-period radio transient ever detected, offering new insights into long-period radio transients and their radio wave generation mechanism.
Australian scientists claim a groundbreaking discovery related to a rare and extreme interstellar event. Natasha Hurley-Walker, Associate Professor from the Curtin node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research ( ICRAR ) in Perth, and her student, Csanád Horváth, detected a pulse of bright energy from deep space using the MWA Murchison Widefield Array radio telescope in Western Australia.
This pulse occurs every three hours and lasts 30-60 seconds, making it the longest-period radio transient ever detected. The discovery provides insights into long-period radio transients, which are relatively new to science and whose radio wave generation mechanism is still a mystery. The newly found transient, named GLEAM-X J0704-37, is located far off the Galactic Plane in the Puppis constellation, approximately 5000 light years away, providing a clearer view of its origin
