Australian Medical Association President Doctor Steve Robson says a “combination of factors” has put a “huge dent” in current surgery capacity.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital has announced it may need to defer elective surgeries due to staff shortages coupled with the need to perform urgent surgeries.“The hospitals in many, many months were full of people who were affected by COVID, that its more difficult to get an appointment with a specialist to get yourself on an elective operating list,” Mr Robson told Sky news Australia.

“And of course capacity constraints have been further made more difficult by the fact that many staff in hospitals have COVID and haven’t been able to work.”
