A 25-year-old man from Western Australia has died after his scooter crashed into a pillar while holidaying in Italy, with emergency services unable to arrive in time.

Matthew Borromei, 25, was riding a scooter in the town of Taormina on the east coast of Sicily when he lost control and crashed into a cement pillar ahead, dying instantly.

Local media confirmed the incident occurred just after 9pm on Wednesday and emergency services were quickly summoned but could not make it in time.The 25-year-old WA man had his life cut short after being involved a fatal scooter crash. Picture: InstagramHis father confirmed his passing in an emotional social media post on his late son’s Facebook page.

“Sadly, Matt lost his life whilst touring in Italy and he will be greatly missed by many for his energy, smile and zest for life. “This is a very difficult write with Matt so loved by all and words genuinely fail in this moment. We will wear Black Arm Bands as a show of respect when we play Kangas next Saturday in all grades and cast the biggest collective hug around everyone who loved and knew Matt including many playing with the club today.Mr Borromei’s family said the hilltop town where the young man died was one of his “favourite places” discovered while travelling across Europe.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson conveyed their condolences to the man’s family and said consular support was being provided.
