Alex Cullen, a well-known Australian television presenter, has parted ways with Nine Network following an alleged incident involving a $50,000 payment for using a specific nickname on air.

A popular Australian television program presenter has left the network after he allegedly accepted a $50,000 cash prize for making specific comments on air. Alex Cullen was stood down on Saturday, it emerged he had followed through on an offer from Melbourne-based billionaire Adrian Portelli to refer to him as “McLaren Guy”, rather than the “Lambo Guy” tag he has developed in media. The news of Cullen's departure was announced to viewers by fellow presenter Karl Stefanovic on Friday morning.

“As most of you are well aware, our colleague Alex Cullen has not been on air with us this past week. There has been widespread reporting on the circumstances surrounding this, what I can say is that last night, Alex and Nine agreed that he would finish with the network,” Stefanovic said. The situation unfolded when Portelli offered Cullen the significant sum if he would use the “McLaren Guy” nickname during a live broadcast from the Australian Open. Portelli later posted receipts of the bank transfer to Cullen with the caption “We have a winner! Well played sir” after Cullen had indeed referred to him by his requested nickname during the live cross. On Saturday, a Nine spokesperson confirmed that Cullen was arranging for the return of the cash prize. Earlier in the week, the spokesperson had confirmed that the funds had been returned to Portelli, who subsequently donated the money to charity on Cullen’s behalf. The incident has sparked significant controversy and debate in Australia, raising questions about journalistic integrity and the influence of wealth on media
