Around 20 Australians aboard the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship are considering rejecting the government's evacuation offer over fears of becoming contaminated in transit. The evacuees would be taken and transferred to Christmas Island where they would be put into quarantine for another 14 days - meaning the group would have spent over four weeks in isolation from the general public.
Over 88 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed on the ship, docked in Japan. The ship has been in isolation since February 3 after one man tested positive for the disease. Another 542 cases have since been confirmed on board. A medical team is en route to Japan to rescue Australians trapped on the vessel as early as Wednesday night. About 200 people - mostly aged over 60 - are expected to board a Qantas charter flight to Darwin where they will be placed in quarantine for 14 days.
