Less than 50 per cent of older Australians have received their flu shots.

People aged 65 and over are being urged to get vaccinated as respiratory illnesses rise and national vaccine rates remain low.

Flu vaccination rates for this time of year are the lowest they've been in five years, with only 49.9 per cent of those aged 65 and over vaccinated, compared to 2020 when 57.8 per cent had received their flu shot by May, according to data from NCIRS.People aged over 65 are being urged to get vaccinated as respiratory illnesses rise, and national vaccine rates remain low.

NSW has seen a 27 per cent increase in influenza cases and a 23 per cent increase in COVID-19 notifications compared to last week. "While everyone aged six months and over is urged to get their influenza vaccine as soon as possible, it is particularly important for those at higher risk of severe illness from the virus," Chant said."Less than half of people aged 65 and over in NSW have received their influenza vaccine this year and we really need to see that number go up, especially as people in this age group are among those most at risk of severe illness.
