Money.com.au's research shows that 28% of Australians believe Labor's biggest failure is not addressing housing affordability since last year's election. While cost of living and healthcare access were also mentioned, 16% of respondents pointed to housing as the government's largest failure, highlighting the primary economic pain Australians face.

Labor's biggest failure over the past year in the eyes of Australians revealed by Money.com.au as government battles heated backlash to federal budget Labor's biggest failure over the past year according to Australians has been revealed, as the government faces heated backlash over major tax changes announced at the budget.

Housing affordability is Labor’s biggest policy failure in the eyes of Australians, as the Albanese government faces intense backlash over its sweeping tax changes aimed at making home ownership more accessible.research, shared exclusively with SkyNews.com.au, showed 28 per cent of Australians said Labor's biggest failure is having failed to properly address housing affordability since last year's election. Another 19 per cent said Labor's worst failure was its inability to properly address the cost of living while 16 per cent highlighted healthcare access and costs.

Money.com.au’s finance expert Sean Callery said housing was the primary economic pain for Australians despite Labor’s series of pledges in the last election campaign. Money.com.au research showed housing affordability was Labor's biggest failure over the past year. Picture: NewsWire / Nikki Short “Housing supply and affordability continues to be the defining issue shaping how Australians view their financial future and government performance,” Mr Callery said.

“Despite a range of housing initiatives being introduced over the past year, including the expansion of the First Home Guarantee Scheme and Help to Buy Scheme, many Australians feel these policies are not yet moving the needle in a meaningful way. ”“The government is pulling major policy levers to tackle housing affordability pressures, but without meaningful improvements to housing supply, these reforms will struggle to significantly shift the dial,” he said.

He also stressed that housing supply constraints, combined with high inflation and concerns about further rate hikes, could “further worsen housing affordability”. Price pressures have plagued households over the past year as inflation surged due to large government spending, a rebound in the private sector and low productivity. Soaring fuel prices from the oil crisis has worsened inflation and accelerated the price pains felt by millions of households.

Mr Callery said it was “telling” that cost of living ranked so highly as a failing of the government.

“Particularly given 2025 was heavily framed as a cost-of-living election, with voters promised meaningful relief on essentials like energy, groceries and household expenses,” he said. “Now add the strain of rising fuel costs and global disruptions, and it is clear many households may still be a long way from seeing meaningful improvements in their day-to-day financial position. ” Housing affordability was ranked as the government’s largest failure across every generation, however, younger Australians felt the pressure more acutely.

About 37 per cent of Generation Z respondents nominated housing affordability alongside 30 per cent of Millennials. At least 15 per cent of Millennials said the government was falling short on support for first-home buyers as frustration grows among younger generations on housing. This was significantly above the broader nine per cent of respondents who said Labor has failed to support first home buyers.

About eight per cent said Labor’s biggest failure was wages and income growth, while another eight per cent pointed to conditions for small businesses and seven per cent felt energy costs were the Albanese government’s biggest failure over the past year.
