Wine lovers have a rare chance to quaff exceptional shiraz from a vineyard planted more than 100 years ago, writes Des Houghton.

Henschke Mount Edelstone 2017, which retails for $235 a bottle, and the $140 Henschke The Wheelwright 2017 will be available by the glass at nearly 30 restaurants in capital cities and some regional centres including Noosa and Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast and Dunkeld in regional Victoria.

Sixth-generation vintner Justine Henschke said both wines occupy a special place in her family’s winemaking history. The grapes for The Wheelwright were harvested from 50-year-old vines. The palate is rich and plush with layers of red fruit interwoven with anise and vanilla. “It has also dramatically enriched the soils which are humus-rich and full of life; a living food web of organisms, bacteria, worms and fungi that play a vital role in sharing nutrients with the vines and supporting them through their seasonal cycle,” she said.
