The Associated Press has quoted three unnamed Israeli officials saying they have assessed the incident as an attempted terror attack, and not related to any kind of mental health issue with either of the pilots. The incident has heightened security fears in Israel weeks before Israelis vote in the first election since the Hamas-led October 7 attacks in 2023, with Israel's security figuring prominently in the campaigning.
Benjamin Netanyahu has told the US Fox News network that it's too early to identify the reasons for what happened.
"The attacking pilot is now being investigated in Saudi Arabia. I think he'll be taken to the Emirates where he comes from, or at least where he left, where he flew off from. We'll be following and possibly also participating in this investigation. So we'll find out.
" Former federal court judge Iain Ross will lead a nation-first royal commission into the artificial intelligence boom in South Australia. He will be assisted by machine learning experts Kate Pounder and Professor Christopher Manning, who have been selected as commissioners. South Australia's Premier Peter Malinauskas says the commission will be an evidence-based inquiry into AI's implications for the state.
"Ten years from now, you can almost guarantee that governments around the world are going to be looking back on this moment and asking themselves, did we honestly do everything within our means to ensure that AI is working for people, rather than people working for AI. And I want to get the answers to those questions right now.
" The federal government has talked up the latest house price figures that show the downturn is on track to become the deepest of the past 40 years. Cotality's September data shows national property values went down 1.1 per cent that month, and several market economists have forecast property prices will fall overall by between nine to 13 per cent. The median dwelling value has fallen to just under $900,000, which is essentially where it was 12 months earlier.
But Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the new numbers shows the housing market is becoming more equitable for first home buyers, after decades of extraordinary growth.
"If you look at the challenge we've had in our society for too long, it's an inter-generational inequity that we've seen for too long, is that young people and first-time buyers have been locked out of the housing market for decades, since the mistake was made with the tax changes a quarter of a century ago. So our policy is not about targeting a particular price outcome or percentage.
It's about making sure that there are more affordable options for more people, particularly young people.
" Advocates are calling for certainty on how N-D-I-S supports will be impacted after the launching of the first phase of a program to take children with autism off the scheme. Autism Association of Australia and People with Disability Australia say the disability community is still in the dark about how Thriving Kids would eventually work as the full rollout is completed.
The first changes include launching a website and autism helpline, with a transitory rollout period in place until 2028 when children will migrate to state programs. Jenny Karavalos from Disability Advocacy Network Australia says families want assurances that help is available.
"We're expecting children to be trapeze artists, and there's no safety net underneath. You're not going to want to let go of what you've currently got, even if it's adequate or inadequate, when it's your child's most vulnerable time. And children shouldn't be the shock absorber while the adults are trying to get right systems and which system you're meant to be in.
" Federal communications minister Anika Wells has been nominated in Time magazine's 100 most influential rising stars list. Ms Wells was recognised by the US publication for her role in Australia's world-first social media ban for under-16s. The citation for the magazine has been written by former prime minister Julia Gillard, describing Ms Wells as a "significant voice" in growing safety calls for social media.
She was nominated alongside pop stars Troye Sivan, PinkPantheress, horror director Curry Barker, actor Cooper Hoffman, US soccer star Folarin Balogun among others. The 37-year-old has revealed the news during an interview with Stan Sport commentator Justin Harrison, himself a former international for Australia. Nathan Charles retired from rugby union in 2018 after becoming the first cystic fibrosis sufferer in the world to play a contact sport professionally.
"For a long period there I just didn't know what it was. I've had that many tests, seen that many doctors - and it just wasn't getting any outcome. But my health just kept declining.
"The 65-year-old says he will not return for an 11th season at the helm of the Lions, despite having a year to run on his contract and leading the side to a third consecutive AFL flag. He has released a statement saying the job is all encompassing and that the time is right to walk away. Sign up now for daily news from Australia and around the world.
