After trading Alex Newhook to Montreal to stockpile more NHL draft picks, the Avalanche flipped one of those picks for Ross Colton from the Lightning.
The Avalanche acquired the rights to restricted free agent Ross Colton from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for the No. 37 pick in the 2023 draft, the team announced Wednesday morning.
The Avs have added two centers this offseason while retaining their No. 27 overall pick and obtaining another first-rounder. With Ryan Johansen and Colton, they have retooled their depth in the middle of the ice behind Nathan MacKinnon. The Avs had been holding out hope of re-signing Compher, 28, who’s coming off a career year in 2022-23. He amassed a career-high 52 points and finished 13th in voting for the Selke Trophy, awarded to the league’s best defensive forward.
