Avatar producer clarifies if any movie will go to Earth. 'Jim went off and he wrote 1,500 pages of story notes, having tossed around ideas like, Do we stay on Pandora? Do we go somewhere else? And [he] made the decision to keep all the stories on Pandora.'
Avatar: The Way of Water producer Jon Landau has clarified whether any of the future Avatar sequels will take place on Earth. Set over a decade after the events of Avatar, the sequel to the 2009 film follows the Sully family as they are forced into a conflict with humans who have returned to Pandora, intent on taking more resources from the planet.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Landau confirmed that films following Avatar: The Way of Water will continue to be set on Pandora. His statement seemingly contradicts his previous claim that Avatar 5 would see Earth appear for the first time, with a section of the film featuring Neytiri on the dying planet to learn more about humanity.
Jim went off and he wrote 1,500 pages of story notes, having tossed around ideas like, Do we stay on Pandora? Do we go somewhere else? And [he] made the decision to keep all the stories on Pandora, because we realized that we could spend our whole lives traveling Earth, and not see all the wonders it holds or not meet all the diverse cultures that exist here. We want to do that same thing with the sequels, so set all the movies on Pandora.
For now, it seems that Earth itself will not appear in the films, with the conflict between humans and Na'vi relegated to Pandora. However, because of humanity's attempts to control parts of Pandora for the sake of economic growth and resources for their dying planet, Earth will still have a looming presence over the series, even if none of the films are set there.
Why Avatar Staying On Pandora Is A Good Thing If the Avatar franchise truly does stay on Pandora through Avatar 5, then the films will be able to readily develop the planet and its people in ways that engage audiences in their struggle for survival. If Earth were to appear in the film, the state of the planet could be used to complicate the conflict between humans and Na'vi, but not without taking developmental time away from the alien world James Cameron has created.
