Its success cutting the number of people sleeping on sidewalks, in tents or in other places not meant for habitation in Harris and Fort Bend counties by 67 percent since 2011 has drawn nationwide attention. In the past year, however, difficulty securing housing for the program has slowed efforts to move people off the streets.
. The Houston Housing Authority is building 430 units on the southwest corner of Jensen and Clinton called the Bend at EaDo, roughly half of which will be rented below market rates. It also has begun construction on roughly 300 affordable rental units off Middle Street in a development called the Pointe at Bayou Bend. A spokesperson for the housing authority said units from the projects are expected to become available in the second half of 2024.
Marisol Balderas, one of the first residents at Avenue J, said in a release she was grateful that complex met her family's financial needs. A one-bedroom unit is 640 square feet, while the two-bedroom units are roughly 1,000 square feet. Amenities at 5220 Avenue J include a community lounge, business center, fitness trail and a shared outdoor terrace with grills.
