CLEVELAND, Ohio — After being shut out for nearly the entire first half Friday, host Avon Lake scored twice late in the second quarter and then held off winless Elyria in the second half, taking a 38-30 Southwestern Conference victory.

Avon Lake plays at Olmsted Falls next Friday, while Elyria hosts Amherst. The Pioneers scored first on a 33-yard pass from Justin Godbolt to Brian Todd, and the lead was upped to 9-0 when Avon Lake had a snap to its punter sail over his head and out of the end zone for a safety. The score remained that way for most of the second period, but Avon Lake finally broke through when Jake Bova scored from 5 yards out with 1:33 left in the half.
