It’s an immigrant story,” explains Ben Power, who adapted the play from the original by Italian writer Stefano Massini. “It’s about people who have to build a new thing for themselves.
Instead, what they encountered was a family epic, sprawling at almost nine hours long, and laid out like a poem rather than a script. “We were just blown away by it,” says Power.Mendes and Power set about transforming the text into something that would resonate with English-speaking audiences, and through a series of workshops managed to reduce the play to three hours and from a cast of 20 to three.
