For more than a year, the film follows the Tallahassee-based civil rights attorney around the country in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic while defending racially charged cases involving Black men and women who've died during interactions with police: George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Andre Hill, among others.
Crump's law firm also represented the family of Andre Hill, who received a record $10 million settlement from the city of Columbus after the unarmed Black man was shot and killed by Officer Adam Coy. $1.5 million in the Mike Brown case, where the unarmed 18-year-old Black man was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
Hallgren, who directed Netflix's"Becoming" documentary on First Lady Michelle Obama, was curious about Crump. Three months after"Becoming" was released, Hallgren received a call from"Black-ish" creator Kenya Barris who wanted to know if she'd be interested in a documentary featuring Crump. At times, the juggling act reaches a frenetic pace. Crump presses on, knowing the throngs of people depending on his steady legal hand for guidance and the inevitable next case and hashtag calling for racial justice.
More than 500 calls per day pour into Crump's law firm and call center, which are sifted to determine whether they'll get passed on to Crump. For him, time is fleeting faster than a freight train. Every moment counts.
