Ayala: Young women trapped in ‘familial trafficking’ face years of healing

Adriana McKinnon had worked with people who’d been smuggled and trafficked. She’d worked in a shelter for battered women and in another for undocumented unaccompanied minors.

Their experiences were altogether different, and their abusers, or traffickers, weren’t the stereotypical figures of coyotes or cartel members seen in movies and TV shows. Even more shocking was the trafficker’s gender and relationship to the victim: a woman, usually the victim’s drug-dependent mother exchanging sex with her daughter for money or drugs.

The Youth Center began as an initiative of the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, which awarded the center $500,000 in fiscal year 2021-2022. The center also received a Victims of Crime Assistance grant in October 2021 for $150,000.McKinnon said it’s hard to know if young men are similarly trafficked because they don’t report such abuse. The center’s approach to treatment and rehabilitation is holistic and encompasses a wide range of services.

Sometimes they’re “Romeo” traffickers, so-called because they begin as loving, caring boyfriends who groom young women for commercial sex traffic.
