San Diego State exceeds computer projection of game against Spartans
San Diego State played the San Jose State Spartans on Friday night in basketball before the season’s second largest crowd at Viejas Arena. There was little doubt the Aztecs would win, a team with 10 conference victories this season hosting a team that has eight wins over the last. The bigger question was by how much and whether it would meet the lofty expectations of the various computer metrics that have become such an integral part of NCAA Tournament selection, which now is just 15 days away.
In that regard, the next one is the biggie: at second-place Wyoming on Monday night. The Cowboys are above the Aztecs in the conference standings but below them in every major metric. They also play at 7,200 feet and are the only Mountain West team still undefeated at home.Friday was statistically their fifth best offensive performance of 2021-22, equally effective against San Jose State’s man and zone defenses, shooting 50.
Nine different Aztecs scored, led by Bradley with 15 and Keshad Johnson with 14. Trey Pulliam hit double figures for the first time in 10 games with 13 points on 4 of 7 shooting. Nathan Mensah had eight points and 13 rebounds despite dinging an elbow that forced him to briefly sub out midway through the second half.
