Burmeister looking like starter against Hawaii, but Mayden adds depth to thinned position

Mayden jogged onto the practice field Monday afternoon still wearing No. 18, but it was a green QB jersey. He got reps behind starting quarterback Braxton Burmeister and backup quarterback Liu Aumavae, under the direction of new SDSU quarterbacks coach Ryan Lindley.

SDSU head coach Brady Hoke said in a radio interview Monday morning that Burmeister is “day-to-day” and “making some progress.” With quarterback Will Haskell leaving the team two weeks ago, the Aztecs were down to one able-bodied scholarship quarterback against Boise State. Mayden was beginning to make an impact on defense after switching to safety during the spring, but now his presence is needed to provide depth at the most important position on the field.

Mayden was a four-star recruit out of Texas’ Sachse High. He was the state’s second-rated dual-threat QB and chose to attend Mississippi State.
