Aztecs show promising signs in passing game during annual Spring game
New San Diego State offensive coordinator Ryan Lindley did not overpromise coming into Thursday night’s Spring game at Snapdragon Stadium.
Mostly cloudy skies over Snapdragon dropped some sprinkles during pregame warmups. It was a pleasant, if crisp, 55 degrees at kickoff . There were encouraging glimpses, as when starting quarterback Jalen Mayden hit sophomore wide receiver Phillippe Wesley II with a 39-yard pass in the first quarter and senior wide receiver Brionne Penny with a 53-yard throw in the second quarter. Wesley added a 50-yard catch as well.
Williams, a swift 5-foot-10 junior transfer from Western Carolina, is eyed as a potential deep threat this season. “We’re trying to get his feet to continue to be in a place where he can be as accurate as can be,” Lindley said. “When he gets off his base that’s where it goes a little haywire. That may have bee the case earlier in offseason workouts, but Mayden had his struggles during a second quarter in which he was intercepted three times. The junior transfer from Texas showed all is well when he picked off a Mayden pass one minute into the second period.
Tumblin added a second interception on the first play of the second half when he picked off a pass by fourth-string quarterback DJ Ralph. Later in the quarter, sophomore safety Eric Butler notched the secondary’s fifth interception of the game when he picked off third-string quarterback Liu Aumavae .
