Julia Ruth Stevens lived 70 years longer than her legendary father and proudly spoke about him throughout her life.
Nicknamed The Great Bambino and the Sultan of Swat, Ruth was perhaps the greatest figure in 20th-century baseball, becoming a cultural icon between both world wars.
He started out as a pitcher but went on to become internationally renowned with the bat — and for smashing home runs.During his 14 years with the Yankees, his skill and popularity helped them become the most dominant outfit in baseball, often watched by record crowds. When the team shifted into a new stadium in 1923 it was known among fans as The House that Ruth Built.
Considered by many as the greatest Major League player ever, Ruth won seven World Series championships and his Number 3 jersey retired by the Yankees in 1948.Babe Ruth died from cancer at age 53 in 1948 and as his body lay in repose in a New York cathedral. It was estimated more than 100,000 people came to pay their respects."I couldn't have had a better father than him," she said.Ms Stevens was the older of two daughters adopted by Ruth.
