A baby has been found unrestrained in a speeding car - one of many driving offences caught by Queensland Police during a school holiday road safety crackdown. 7NEWS
“Police intercepted a driver who was speeding and then when police approached the vehicle, they then observed a baby unrestrained in the passenger seatwell of that vehicle,” said Road Policing Acting Assistant Commissioner Chris Stream.
The man was ticketed for using a vehicle with registration or number plate or permit altered, speeding more than 20 km/hr over limit and driving a motor vehicle while a passenger at least six months old but less than four years old is unrestrained. While he didn’t front court over the incident, a Queensland Police spokesperson stated that “his licence may be in danger and his wallet will be a whole lot lighter” which is often a bigger deterrent.
Road Policing Acting Assistant Commissioner Chris Stream said the high cases of road incidences are “really frustrating for police”.Other extreme offences include a 35-year-old Redbank man caught driving 120km/h in a 60km/h zone, a 56-year-old Peregian Beach woman who returned a breath test reading of 0.239 and a 40-year-old Loganlea man who returned a breath test reading of 0.241, both readings more than four times the legal alcohol limit.
“ too many people being detected already in the first week of this year breaking our road rules, driving irresponsibly and doing stupid things on our roads,” said Ryan. The main causes are a combination of speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, not wearing a seatbelt, fatigue and distraction.“Let me be blunt to the Queensland driving community,” he said. “If we continue along the lines committing offences like we’re seeing currently, we will see more fatalities.
