Doc Originally Invented Hover Tech In The 21st Century Back to the Future Part III predicted flying cars would be the norm by 2015. Although there was plenty Back to the Future got right about 2015, the film's prediction of flying cars and hover boards turned out to be wrong, However, a theory shared on Reddit provided an argument as to why technology never developed at the rate Back to the Future expected.
Doc's BTTF 3 Decision Changed History This is where Back to the Future Part III has the biggest effect on the hover system. At the end of Back to the Future Part III, Doc famously declares “Nope, already been there” when asked by Marty if he will go back to the future. This means Doc never lived in the 21st and was never there to create the hover system.
BTTF's Flying Cars Couldn't Happen Without Doc The flying DeLorean is an iconic aspect of Back to the Future but its origins are not really explored. Marty does mention the hover system is created by Doc, but Doc is not credited for creating the flying car. It is likely the flying cars were built based on the hover system that Doc created, but he may not have developed this himself.
