Former premier Mike Baird has weighed into the Willoughby preselection race, insisting former television journalist Kellie Sloane has the potential to be a future party leader | AlexSmithSMH

Former premier Mike Baird has weighed into the Willoughby preselection race to replace Gladys Berejiklian, insisting former television journalist Kellie Sloane has the potential to be a future party leader.

While Mr Baird is backing Ms Sloane, his successor Ms Berejiklian is supporting the Willoughby mayor Gail Giles-Gidney to replace her in the safe Liberal state seat. Supporters of Mr James include former Willoughby MP and Liberal leader Peter Collins, who Ms Berejiklian replaced, as well as high-profile barrister Margaret Cunneen.

“She is a very talented woman that I would say, if you are lining up in a job interview, would be right at the top of the list for who she is, what she has done and importantly, what she can do.”Former treasurer and US ambassador Joe Hockey, a close friend of Ms Berejiklian’s, is also backing Ms Sloane, along with Seven Group chief executive Ryan Stokes, former deputy prime minister Michael McCormack and Wentworth MP Dave Sharma, who has written her a reference.

Senior members of Premier Dominic Perrottet’s team, including Police Minister David Elliott and Skills Minister Geoff Lee, have been urged to run for federal politics, but both have ruled it out.Ms Berejiklian resigned as premier two months ago after the corruption commission revealed it was investigating whether she breached the public trust or encouraged in corrupt conduct during her secret relationship with disgraced former MP Daryl Maguire.
