A Florence baker's sweet treats helped her win over her bullies in middle school. Next up for Maddie Howton and her mother April is using their cooking creations to try to defeat the competition on the upcoming season of BakingIt on peacock.
Middle schoolers can be total jerks. Life hasn’t kicked around most of them yet, so they’re quick to pick on classmates who don’t have the right look, abilities, interests, money, etc.
Maddie started off baking cake-pops, small and iced cake spheres on lollipop sticks. She then progressed to macaroons, cakes and cupcakes, sourdough and other breads. Her love for baking continued to rise ever since. And oh by the way, cruel middle school classmates, she also grew up to be a statuesque beauty.
“Our businesses are very cohesive which is so cool,” Maddie says. April adds, “We work well together because I know where her strengths are and she knows where mine are.” “I love this show because it truly is home bakers,” April says. “We were not a plant. We went through an application process just like any ordinary person could. This is not, you know, somebody who’s really great on TV. We’re just a mom and daughter from Alabama who saw a really cool opportunity.”
When it was time to start making the show, Maddie says, “I enjoyed how it was not so cutthroat like ‘Master Chef.’ They didn’t want to see you fail. Like everybody was there to help each other. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, I hope she messes up.’” They Howtons became friends with their fellow “Baking It” contestants and have remained in touch since then, texting daily.
