Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, white shorts, fighting Srisaket Sor Rungvisai as he defends his WBC World Super-Flyweight title on Saturday June 25, 2022 at the Tech Port Arena in San Antonio. The moment the referee stepped in to stop the fight, Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez turned and fell to his knees. As he dropped face forward onto the canvas and rolled to the center of the ring, the emotion was clear on his face.
“I’m a great fighter,” Rodriguez said. “It’s something I always knew, but to finally prove it to the people, the media, everybody that doubted me, it just feels amazing.” “Robert before the fight said, ‘Every punch you throw is going to land,’ and that’s what happened,” Rodriguez said. “I’m not surprised. We executed the game plan perfect, and we came out with a win.”
Speaking on the DAZN broadcast in the ring after the fight, Matchroom Sport chairman Eddie Hearn described Rodriguez as a generational talent. The fans reacted accordingly through the night, giving Rodriguez a standing ovation during an entrance that he described as “like a dream.” He said the fan support was unlike any he’d felt before, fighting in San Antonio for the first time since 2018.
“It hurts,” Medina said. “You don’t want an L. You want to protect that 0, and you want to represent yourself well, but it happens to the best fighters. … I just have to get back to my team, get back to the drawing board, and stay working.”
