ACTU secretary Sally McManus says sensible changes should be made to awards “that finally bring them into the reality of 2024”.

Millions of workers should be given the right to work from home, according to a proposal by the union movement’s peak body that ratchets up the tension between staff and their bosses over returning to the office.

“This includes the right to work from home, and flexibility that is two-way, not one-way,” she said on Wednesday. The ACTU said workers should be given the right to request to work from home individually and collectively, which would usually occur through enterprise bargaining, and the Fair Work Commission should be empowered to settle disputes.

“This is yet another power grab by the ACTU that will create more administrative obligations and more red tape,” he said. The submission follows those of key employer groups the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Australian Industry Group, which called on awards to be changed so that remote workers could make up time lost from household duties earlier or later in the day.Ai Group’s submission raised several awards as examples to show that work done outside ordinary hours would usually include overtime rates.
