A Bangor salon owner was today cleared by a jury on a charge of causing grievous bodily injury to a fellow motorist by dangerous driving.

A jury of six men and six women spent around three hours deliberating before they returned a unanimous "not guilty" verdict against Kevin Kahan.

During the trial held at Belfast Crown Court, several witnesses confirmed weather conditions that afternoon were “horrendous”, and it was the Crown’s case Mr Kahan was driving too quickly for the road and weather conditions that day. However, this claim was rejected by Mr Kahan, and when he was called to the witness box, he recalled how he lost control of his car when it aquaplaned on surface water lying in the road.

“It was completely out of my control ... and unfortunately I hit the oncoming car on the other side of the road.”
