Victorian Opposition Leader Jess Wilson says the return of ISIS brides poses an 'unacceptable threat' to community safety.

Return of ISIS brides 'unacceptable threat' to community safety, Premier must manage risk: Jess Wilson The return of ISIS brides presents an"unacceptable threat" to community safety as the cohort is set to arrive in Sydney and Melbourne this afternoon.

Victorian Opposition Leader Jess Wilson says the return of ISIS brides poses an"unacceptable threat" to community safety. Ahead of the arrival of three women and their eight children and grandchildren at Melbourne Airport this afternoon, Ms Wilson called on the Premier to outline how she will mitigate any risks. Ms Wilson has warned that the arrival of the 11-strong cohort represents an"unacceptable threat" to Victorians.

"The expected return of a number of ISIS brides into Victoria today represents an unacceptable threat to community safety and social cohesion," she said on Thursday. "The Victorian Liberals and Nationals believe any adult who has left Australia to align themselves with a barbaric terrorist organisation should not be welcomed back into our state. "Victorians need certainty and reassurance.

Premier Allan must immediately explain what measures will be taken to manage these individuals and guarantee that community safety will not be jeopardised by their return.

"“Those questions are a matter for the Australian Federal Police, and we saw the federal police commissioner address these matters yesterday,” Ms Allan told reporters on Thursday. “What we have been doing in terms of the discussions with state-based officials and with Victoria Police is ensuring that community safety here in Victoria comes first. “In terms of the arrangements that follow post their arrival, that will be determined following their arrival.

” One ISIS bride and her child will arrive in Sydney on Thursday on top of the cohort expected in Melbourne. Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett confirmed some members of the group would be arrested, while others would remain under investigation.

"I will not flag how many individuals will be arrested or when they will be arrested to protect a number of our investigations," she said. "Some individuals will be arrested and charged. Some will face continued investigations when they arrive in Australia.

"And children who return in the cohort will be asked to undergo community integration programmes, therapeutic support, and countering violent extremism programmes. " ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess said the agency had assessed the national security risks posed by the group and shared that intelligence with police and government. “Our job is to identify and understand the risks to returning individuals. We have done that,” he said.

The actions my agency takes beyond that is something I don't talk about publicly. ” Meanwhile, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said his government has an"obligation" to ensure the safety and welfare of the children in the group.

"The kids have got nothing to do with this and didn't make the decision to travel to Syria, and we've got an obligation to ensure that they are safe, in my view, and that there is no radicalisation there. " Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has maintained that the government"has not and will not" provide any assistance to the group.

However, a Syrian government official told the ABC the Australian government held"ultimate authority". The official said the group's departure was delayed until the Commonwealth had put the necessary"procedures in place. "
