A new report reveals that Mattel and writing duo Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach originally had different plans regarding the script process.
According to a new report, the script process for Barbie involved some disagreements between co-writers Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and Mattel. Based on the iconic Mattel toy, Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the titular doll as she is expelled from Barbie Land and embarks on a journey to the Real World. The upcoming film marks Gerwig's biggest movie yet following Lady Bird and Little Women.
As the Barbie release date inches closer, a new report from The New Yorker reveals that Mattel was initially hesitant about Gerwig and Baumbach taking on scripting duties. Robbie Brenner, head of Mattel Films, was apparently keen on seeing a preview of what the script would feature, which Gerwig and Baumbach disagreed with as they felt this would hinder their ability to explore different creative avenues. Jeremy Barber, Gerwig's and Baumbach's agent at U.T.A.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT “Are you crazy? You should’ve come into this office and thanked me when Greta and Noah showed up to write a f---ing Barbie movie!” Why Gerwig & Baumbach Are Great Choices For Barbie If there's one thing both Gerwig and Baumbach have made clear with their respective careers, it's that they approach each of their movies with a distinct vision. Baumbach, in particular, has a unique writing stye that has been shown off in movies like The Squid and the Whale, Marriage Story, and White Noise.
What could end up making Barbie memorable as a film won't just be how comedic it is, but rather how it handles its main character. Both writers have mostly worked with smaller, character-driven stories in the past instead of big-budget IP storytelling, which means audiences could end up with something that feels different from, say, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which, while entertaining, is really quite safe from a storytelling perspective.
