Barilaro’s proposal to change trade postings was fast-tracked through cabinet, inquiry hears | natassiazc

A proposal to give government ministers the power to appoint $500,000-a-year trade commissioner roles instead of the public service was allegedly fast-tracked through cabinet in the weeks before John Barilaro resigned from parliament.

But Barilaro’s proposal to change the recruitment process for the commissioner roles went through within about 10 days. It came before cabinet around September 27 - about a week before Barilaro’s resignation on October 3.“He asked me to contact [Investment NSW boss] Amy Brown and request a cabinet submission converting the commissioner roles to ministerial appointments,” he said, noting that the time frame requested was “ASAP”.

“I recall having a conversation with the deputy premier and he said to me that he would talk to the other ministers,” Brayford said.
