Opinion: Barring the usual Labor backstabbers, Albanese can rise from his fall, writes Peter Beattie
Albanese has undoubtedly grown in the job. He has lost weight and improved his presentation and image. He has released positive policies without scaring the horses. He has been prepared to do the hard work necessary to win an election from opposition and, until Monday, he had stayed on message notwithstanding his critics internally and externally.
Saying he would govern like Bob Hawke and Paul Keating, at the same time acknowledging the strengths of John Howard, was not just good politics but demonstrated a maturity a young left-wing Albanese would not have had.Albanese’s future now rests with ordinary Australians who are tired of the old politics. The Australian electorate is the best educated and informed in the country’s history. While social media has a nasty underbelly layered with disinformation, it also informs.
There is a growing section of the electorate that is both sophisticated and cynical, which wants real answers on affordable childcare, more renewable energy, safer aged care, skilled jobs, better education and healthcare and an anti-corruption commission. Albanese is tapping into this sentiment already with his policy settings.
