After completing stellar 2021 campaigns, Ash Barty and Dylan Alcott are recognised as Tennis Australia's players of the year.
Ash Barty and Dylan Alcott have capped off their outstanding 2021 campaigns by being announced as joint Newcombe Medal winners.It is the second time Dylan Alcott has received the awardIt was a record-setting fourth consecutive Newcombe Medal for Barty,and finished the year ranked number one in the world.
Alcott became the first male tennis player to win the "Golden Slam" in 2021, with the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open and Paralympic titles in quad wheelchair singles."Dylan has become an icon of sport. Not just for wheelchair athletes but for all athletes across the globe.Barty was Australia's first women's Wimbledon champion since 1980.
She also joined the likes of Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert as only the eighth woman to finish as year-end number one for three straight seasons. In addition to adding the Wimbledon crown to her 2019 French Open championship, Barty won titles in Melbourne, Miami, Stuttgart and Cincinnati this year.
