In his new memoir, NBA star turned broadcaster Kenny Smith reflects on what he learned from Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon—and his parents
Kenny “the Jet” Smith won back-to-back NBA championships with the Houston Rockets in the mid-90s and has since found yet more fame as a basketball analyst on TNT. Still, he wonders what might have been if he had played for the Chicago Bulls alongside his former teammate at the University of North Carolina, Michael Jordan.
“He always pushed me to another level,” Mr. Smith, 58, says over video from Atlanta, where he is on the air nightly during the playoffs with his “Inside the NBA” co-hosts Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal. “That’s why I was always jealous of Scottie Pippen. When Scottie Pippen first came into the NBA, he wasn’t a threat, but then he became one of the 75 best players of all time. That’s what Michael did for him,” he says. “Man, I wish that was me.
