Strong winds have toppled Kenny the big Kennebec potato on Tasmania's Bass Highway, but the landmark's owner says it will return after a makeover.

Fondly known as Kenny the Kennebec, the spud was built 40 years ago by the family of Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff.A giant of Tasmanian pop culture has tumbled from its lofty position above a highway.

The family had a small business at the time selling potatoes from the side of the road off the back of a "covered wagon like the Wild West". "It's done pretty well considering the weather conditions it's experienced over that long period of time," Mr Rockliff added."Those winds must have been stronger than we thought at Sassafras over the weekend," he said."When he was brand new, he was very sparkly," Mr Rockliff recalled with a chuckle.
