The second practice session for the Bathurst 1000 has been delayed after a snake was spotted lurking on the side of the Mount Panorama track. After lead drivers blitzed the hour-long first session, co-drivers were due to hit the track at 4.55pm AEDT. But an earlier oil spill during the Heritage Touring Cars session, combined with the sighting of the eastern brown snake at Forrest’s Elbow forced the session to be delayed.
The 22-year-old shot to the top of the timing charts in the dying minutes of the hour-long session to be narrowly ahead of Cam Waters and championship leader Will Brown on Thursday. He finished with a best lap time of two minutes and 7.294 seconds, just 3.023s short of reigning series champion Brodie Kostecki’s qualifying record set last year. Sitting fifth in the Supercars championship, Grove Racing driver Payne is paired with five-time Bathurst winner Garth Tander.
