In six years at Texas, Andrew Jones has battled back from leukemia, making a comeback few expected and becoming an inspiration. Now the guard from Irving...

wants time to actually enjoy and immerse himself in the NCAA Tournament experience.

“Emotions are high right now,” Jones said in a phone interview this week. “I’m really looking forward to making a run in this tournament this year. The odds are definitely stacked against us. But I feel like we can make a run if we buy in and put out our best performance.” Basketball, of course, has only been part of Jones’ life story since Smart announced the leukemia diagnosis on Jan. 10, 2018.

“That was like a drastic turning point for me because that was really the first time that I’ve had like a life-or-death experience to where the odds aren’t in my favor.” “Just so much respect for him,” Beard said. “It really is a ‘30 For 30.’ I mean, Drew’s probably not supposed to be here right now. He fought and won against cancer and it took a lot of courage.”Jones posted a photo on social media of him shooting hoops solo at MD Anderson, back when most hoped he would just live a normal life.

Jones and ESPN analyst Dick Vitale, fighting his own cancer battle, talk via phone. He announced this season that he’s, named for former coach Jim Valvano.
