A dispute is in the works between Foxtel and its free TV competitors over the content you see on your smart TV.

The Albanese government has promised to provide better visibility for local streaming apps but Foxtel has sounded the alarm about the impact for all Australians.

“The Government wants Australians to be able to readily access the local TV services they rely on for Australian content, sporting events, news and emergency information,” the Minister told Sky News. “All of the people watching that have Foxtel - it really is a takeover of their remote … if you want to go into apps, all the Free TV apps would be listed first,” Foxtel Group CEO Patrick Delany said. Free to air broadcasters – represented by Free TV Australia – want new rules that would ensure their channels are displayed first on all TVs. Foxtel argues that means it would have to drastically overhaul its layout. It would also change the design and impact personalisation on its soon to be released aggregation platform Magneto.
