One Bay Area county has once again dominated the list of “Beach Bummers” identified by a nonprofit that releases an annual ranking of the dirtiest beaches in California.

“Water samples are analyzed for bacteria that indicate pollution from numerous sources, including fecal waste,” the nonprofit says of its grade methodology. “The better the grade a beach receives, the lower the risk of illness to ocean users.” The report also noted that Marlin, Erckenbrack and Gull parks sit near"series of human engineered channels near Foster City that allow very little water circulation." That allows pollutants to stick around the water instead of being swept out to sea. Pillar Point suffers from"storm drain outfalls that discharge polluted water, which does not get flushed away from the beach by ocean currents or waves due to the harbor's seawalls.
