Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” is now available to rent and buy on digital. Also new this week: Alex Garland’s horror movie “Men” is out on Blu-ray, and an Italian space invader flick gets reissued.
“Battle of the Worlds”:
“Casablanca” star Claude Raines’ last big role was in this 1961 sci-fi flick from Italy about a rogue asteroid heading for Earth. He plays a cranky old scientist whose warnings are ignored by government leaders until it’s almost too late. Stanley Kubrick reportedly consulted with director Antonio Margheriti while working on “2001: A Space Odyssey,” though the movies appear to have come from different galaxies.
The special effects in “Battle of the Worlds” are rudimentary, but the Italian seaside setting is alluring and the exotic score is indeed otherworldly. The movie, newly restored by Film Detective, also looks much better than it ever did on Saturday afternoon TV, the only place anyone is ever likely to have encountered it. A short documentary on European sci-fi before “2001” is worth watching, too.
